Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)

UROP Program Description
The IUPUI Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program is a campus-wide grants program that encourages and supports undergraduate students to work with a faculty mentor on independent research projects. Students may apply for funds to support these research projects in all disciplines.

The program includes the following components:

  1. Academic Year Grants:

Students may apply for a research grant of up to $1000 to conduct research during the academic year. Research grant funds may be used to cover the cost of materials and services directly related to conducting the research or may be used as a student stipend. This may be renewed one time for a total of $2000.

  2. Summer Research Fellow Grants:

Students may apply to be a one-time Summer UROP Research Fellow and take part in the Center for Research and Learning’s nine-week summer program.  In this program 75% of time is spent working on a research project with a mentor and 25% of time is spent attending professional development sessions sponsored by the Center for Research and Learning. For the summer program students receive a stipend of $3200. The Center for Research and Learning recommends that students accepted as UROP Summer Fellows not take classes (except for CRL-approved complementary research-related courses) or work at an additional job throughout the duration of the summer program as the program is considered a full-time commitment.

  3. Presentation Opportunities

A major aspect of scholarly research is the presentation of research findings or scholarly activities to one’s disciplinary peers. Integrated into CRL programs are opportunities for students to develop written, poster and oral presentations, and to deliver these presentations in conference environments at IUPUI.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • All undergraduate students who have a minimum 2.8 GPA and are doing independent research with a faculty member at IUPUI are eligible to apply for a grant. Students who are not enrolled as IUPUI students during the academic year do not qualify for funds. Note that a faculty member may mentor more than one student.

  • Students may hold an Academic Year Research Grant for up to two years from the start of the grant and may request additional project funds if they have not exceeded $1000. Students accepted into the UROP Summer Fellows Program must complete all of their work by the end of the nine-week program.

  • If the student leaves IUPUI or leaves the project with unspent funds, funds are returned to the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Fund.

  • The student must be registered for at least one independent research credit each AY semester during the entire research grant period in which the student is engaged in a UROP-supported research project. During the summer, the student must be enrolled in one of the CRL Summer Programs or enrolled in a research course. If the student’s unit or school does not offer such a course the student must register for Honors H399.

  • Students may hold other scholarships or stipends and research support concurrently with a grant but these other funds must be declared under Other Support and in the budget of the application. UROP is indifferent to whether or not a student receives additional compensation when working on a research project or whether or not UROP funds are supplemented by other grants.  Work study funds will not be considered as stipends. Stipends are considered income for tax purposes and in some cases UROP awards may reduce other financial aid.
