What is the Center for Research and Learning?
The Center for Research and Learning (CRL) exists to develop, expand, and promote research-based learning in all disciplines across the IUPUI campus. The center promotes and supports all varieties of research and scholarship, with special attention to independent undergraduate student research. It promotes the principle that active engagement in research and scholarship promotes learning through inquiry and experience. The CRL complements the missions of the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Center for Service and Learning, and the Center for Integrating Learning, collaborating to provide a well-integrated learning environment for faculty and students across disciplines.
What does the Center Do?
- CRL administers the IUPUI Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program and assists the School of Science in administering its UROP.
- CRL plans symposia for undergraduate research throughout the year including the Indiana University Undergraduate Research Conference and several IUPUI campus symposia throughout the year. In addition the CRL plans special meetings that relate to undergraduate research, graduate study, and careers requiring graduate preparation.
- CRL administers the IUPUI Ronald E. McNair Scholars program supported by the United States Department of Education.
The CRL assists either directly or indirectly with the administration and funding of:
- the IUPUI Diversity Research Scholars Program
- the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute (MURI) in the School of Engineering and Technology
- the Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) in the IUPUI Graduate Office
- the NSF-supported IUPUI program for Midwest Crossroads Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate
- the IUPUI Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is funded by is funded by a multi-million dollars grant from the National Science Foundation. The project is a collaboration of five universities in the state of Indiana. The goal of the project is to double the number of under-represented students who graduate and advance their learning in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines by the end of the five-year grant period (2002-2007). LSAMP-IN is implemented at IUPUI through two initiatives:
** Summer Research Training that provides early research and STEM enrichment experiences
** Supplemental Instruction that supports teaching and learning through peer mentoring in the STEM gatekeeper courses Participants' experiences with research and peer teaching are carefully designed to encourage the under-represented STEM majors to sustain their academic excellence and career advancement in the STEM fields.
