Evaluation of MURI Mentors Project Proposals
The project proposals of the MURI mentors will be evaluated by the MURI Advisory Board prior to each semester and the approved proposals will be posted on the MURI web site. The MURI mentors project proposal forms as well as the evaluation criteria used for the proposals can be found at Mentor Applications and Mentor Proposal Evaluations, respectively.

Expectations from and Compensation for MURI Scholars
The MURI scholars forming a MURI research team are expected to deliver a MURI project as supervised by a MURI mentor in accordance with the following arrangements:

  1. A MURI team must be formed with at least two students working on an inter/multidisciplinary project. Students from schools outside the Engineering and Technology are encouraged to apply.
  2. Students with minimum GPA of 3.00 and 50 credit hours of courses completed in the major are eligible to be MURI scholars.
  3. Each team member should register for at least one-credit hour of an independent study course in the discipline, e.g., ME 491 Engineering Projects or H399 each semester of the project.
  4. The duration and payment schedule of MURI projects are as follows:
    • MURI projects are to be conducted in one semester phases, which may be extended to more than one semester following the successful completion of each phase.
    • No-cost extension of durations are possible to complete projects with the request of mentors.
    • Qualified students are awarded $1,500 stipend per semester for 120 or more hours of research work.
    • Some projects may take longer than one semester depending on the requirements of the project.
    • Scholars will receive half of their stipend ($750) at the start of their project, the remaining half ($750) will be paid at the completion of the project, as declared so by the mentors.
  5. MURI scholars are also qualified to apply for IUPUI UROP grants, which may provide an additional $1,000 award and up to $1,200 for conference travel. See UROP web site for applications. Student scholars are asked to receive advice from their mentors in preparing the applications.

Responsibilities of and Compensation for MURI Mentors

The mentors may receive a mentorship award of up to $2,500 for each team supervised as well as up to $2,000 for research expenses (equipment and supplies) of each team. Depending on the availability of funds, some projects may receive partial funding. Research projects must be conducted in a research or teaching laboratory within the School of Engineering and Technology. The mentors are also expected to:

  1. Keep track of the time devoted by each MURI Scholar for research (=>120 hours).
  2. Complete the projects in a timely manner within a semester.
